Beyond Borders: The True Essence of bonding between Singapore and Malaysia

The bond between Singapore and Malaysia is more than just a geographical connection; it is a deep, historical, and cultural intertwining of lives, families, and friendships. The daily crossings of people between these two nations symbolize not just economic ties but also human connections—stories of love, resilience, and shared heritage.

My connection with Maslinda is a testament to this truth. Her son, Mohamad, was among the many who commuted between Johor Bahru and Singapore for work, a routine so familiar yet filled with unspoken struggles and sacrifices. His passing was a tragedy that crossed both our lives, leaving a void that words could not fill.

For a year, I hesitated, uncertain of how to face Maslinda, knowing the depth of her grief. But on July 1, 2024, I finally crossed an invisible border—not just the physical one between two countries but the emotional one that had kept me away.

When I arrived at her home in Johor Bahru, she welcomed me with a warmth that transcended sorrow. She had prepared everything so beautifully—tea, fresh fruit, and traditional snacks—just as one would for a beloved family member.

As I sat with her, sharing tea and heartfelt conversations, I realized that our sisterhood was more than just friendship; it was a reflection of the deep bond between our two nations. The cross-border connection between Singapore and Malaysia is not just about politics or trade—it is about people, about love, about shared moments like these.

Maslinda’s strength, her kindness, and her ability to embrace life despite her pain humbled me. In her, I saw the resilience of many Malaysian and Singaporean women who hold their families together, who open their hearts despite life’s hardships.

This moment reminded me of what truly matters—the essence of our two nations is not just in our shared history, but in our shared humanity. Borders may separate us, but love, kindness, and understanding will always unite us.

This is the true essence of Singapore and Malaysia

A bond that crosses borders, a sisterhood that endures, and a love that is beyond words.

“Mohamad, to you, may be just a name. But to Maslinda, he was her son, her soul, her hope…”

From the moment she received the news, Maslinda’s world shattered into a silence so deep it drowned out all sound. The name she had called a thousand times before—so full of warmth, of everyday love—suddenly became an echo of absence.

She had once waited at the door for his return, hearing his footsteps before seeing his smile. But now, there would be no more waiting, no more homecomings. The walls of their home stood still, but the space within them felt unbearably empty.

Every little thing carried his presence—his favourite cup, the scent of his clothes, the sound of his laughter still lingering in her memory. But grief is cruel; it turns even the most beautiful memories into pain, because they can no longer be lived.

A mother’s love does not fade with time, nor does the longing. She must now carry the unbearable truth: that the arms she once held him in are empty, and that the future she dreamed for him has been stolen by fate.

Maslinda does not just grieve. She endures. Because that is what a mother does when her child is gone—she carries the love forward, even when the weight of loss is crushing.

Passion is the most beautiful bridge that connects different races

I have shed many tears. Trying to comprehend the accident has drained all my energy. We could only wait helplessly for news. After all, I am also a mother.

When the company received the hospital’s demand for medical expenses exceeding 200,000, deep in my heart, I still felt the pain of the child’s passing.

It was even more heartbreaking when I met Maslinda and learned that Mohamad (Maslinda’s son) had left behind a nearly two-year-old child.
